At nine PM, Shawna pulled up to Pop's house. The lights were still aglow in the windows. A car was parked in the driveway, an old blue Mustang. Pop didn't drive and rarely had visitors. It could only be Eddy's vehicle, Shawna thought. She saw movement through the cracked blinds as she walked up to the front stoop and rang the bell. There was the sound of footsteps and then the door opened, revealing her brother, who gazed back at her with dark eyes almost black in the lighting.

"Who is it?" Pop called from the front room.

"It's Shawna," Eddy said. Then, "Come in. How're you doing, Shawna?"

The sound of Pop's shuffling footsteps preceded him. He stood for a moment, his mouth slightly open and off-center, staring at Shawna in surprise.

"What are you doing here? It's late," he said.

"I know." Shawna stepped inside and put her purse on a little shelf near the door.

"Everything okay?" Pop asked, still baffled as to why she was at his house at nine PM. His brow crinkled with worry.

"Everyone is good," she said quickly.

Too often in her dad's life, a relative had shown up in the night to announce someone had been shot or blown up. Being the brother of a mafia boss had instilled a certain level of paranoia in Stan Kowalski that never went away.

"I actually want to talk with Eddy," Shawna said.

"Oh, now Shawna, let's not start up with that. Eddy's been going to parole, going to church. Everything's good here—"

"I didn't come to talk to Eddy about parole or him living here," Shawna said, cutting Pop off.

"You've come about Jason and Tina," Eddy said, taking a seat on the sofa.

"Who are Jason and Tina?" Pop asked.

"They're good people who got mixed up with Ronny," Shawna said.

Pop hitched up his pajama pants, revealing skinny ankles, his feet clad in slippers, and he sat next to his son. “They can't be that good if they have anything to do with Ronny.” Pop’s eyes, dulled with age, were fixed on Shawna.

"Jason borrowed some money from Ronny, and now Ronny's giving him the runaround," Eddy said.

"That's what happens when you borrow from a loan shark. They don't take kindly when you're late paying them back." Pop rubbed his eyes, and Shawna could see he was tired and not terribly concerned about the plight of two people he’d never heard of. "How many Gs did this Jason person borrow? Ten, twenty K?" Pop asked.

"A grand," Shawna said.

"A grand?" Pop echoed. "You drove all the way here to discuss a thousand dollars? If you're so worried about these good people, why don't you give them the money? Or better yet, give it to Ronny. Or are they too late paying him back, and now Ronny's gotta flex his ego?"

"They were never late to begin with," Shawna said and told her dad the story.

"So this Tina woman also sells milk to Camille?" Pop asked when she was done filling him in.

Shawna nodded.

"I told Camille I didn't think it was a good idea to buy another woman's breast milk," he said.
